Then comes the part that actually matters
Every family tree ends the same way: a grid of names and dates, and nobody left who can tell you what any of them were like. The dates are the easy part. What goes missing is what she said when she was cross, what the kitchen smelled like, why nobody spoke to that side of the family.

Questions
Is the family tree really free?
Yes. No signup, no card, and no limit on how many people you add. It stays free once you keep it, on every plan including the free one.
Do I need an account to start?
No. Put your own name in the first bubble and build outwards, all in your own browser. An account only matters when you want to keep it and reach it again from another device.
How do I add someone?
Tap anybody already on the tree and four + buttons appear around them. Above adds a parent, below adds a child, and either side adds a brother, sister or partner. A new bubble appears where you pressed, and asks the same three things: their name, when they were born, and where.
How does it know which generation someone belongs in?
Because you showed it. There is no relationship word for anything to interpret — pressing the + above your mother IS the fact that she has a parent. It is also why two uncles from opposite sides of a family land in the right places: the diagram knows whose brother each one is, and the word “uncle” never did.
What if I do not know a date, or who somebody’s parents were?
Leave it blank. A year on its own is plenty, and “about 1900” is a perfectly good answer. Anybody whose parents you do not know simply has nothing drawn above them yet. Add them whenever you find out and the tree rearranges itself around what you know.
What happens after I build the tree?
A tree is names and dates. Hystorie then interviews you about the people in it, one question at a time, and keeps the answers word for word — so that in fifty years somebody knows more than the dates. The first hundred questions are free.
